WINSFORD
FLASH Sailing Club 2006
Leigh
& Lowton Juniors went travelling -
Our Juniors were a Third of the Fleet at Winsford
Contrary
to the forecast the day dawned grey at Winsford Flash SC on Saturday 22nd
April 2006. However, the forecast was for 5-6mph winds, in reality the
juniors were rigging in near perfect 10mph+ which was quite welcome (as
was the tea & coffee that was being served by the Galley). Leigh &
Lowton juniors made up 11 of the fleet of 29 Lasers, Toppers & Optimists
which assembled for the briefing prior to the 11:00 am first race.
The Optimists were starting with the main fleet & the 1st start saw
the Lasers head off with the Toppers following closely behind, the majority
of the LLSC sailors were swapping places at the front of the fleet in
what was a closely fought match. The wind was sufficient to cause a few
capsizes & the lack of sunshine was enough to make the watching parents
reaching for woollies, lunchtime was used to recuperate & the sun
came out shortly afterwards, just in time for the 2nd & 3rd races.

Our reporter decided to use the break in the days proceedings to review
the digital images held on camera & make a little space for the afternoons
photography - a couple of button presses soon saw the whole disc formatted
& the mornings photographs lost forever - so much for a career with
the national press!!
One image that was missed by all the cameras that day was of the near
olympic quality reverse somersault & double pike that Chris performed
during the fall off the side of his capsized Topper, he bounced off the
dagger board which acted as a lower springboard before entering the water
head first with the merest ripple evident - next time the gathered judges
parents are going to need some boards with big numbers painted on them
so that the contestant can see the quality of the incident from the bank
- & perhaps Chris should wear a Chelsea shirt!! (controversial eh,
perhaps the Sun will be interested after-all). Oooh! that must have hurt!,
this was after Chris put in his best performance yet in the 2nd race -
really coming to terms with the concept of hiking - good lad!
The subject of chit-chat amongst the juniors, both on & off the water,
was of the art of pumping - some were heard to say What?? - these kids
are learning all the way!

The overall results were headed by 3 Lasers, Sam Thompson & Hugh Sowley
from Winsford & Jonathan Woodhead from Elton, the first Topper was
Andrew Dawson of Winsford then Sophie, Daisy & Sarah from Leigh. Lucy
managed to helm her Optimist to 7th in the 2nd race & ended 14th close
behind Laura & Kaitlyn. Andrew Green, Gideon, Alice, Andrew Price
& Chris were the remaining Leigh & Lowton sailors who took part.
