Winsford 16th April 2005

Leigh & Lowton Juniors went travelling -
Cool dry light airs were the order of the day at Winsford

The second in the 10 event series was held at Winsford Flash Sailing Club on Saturday 16th April. A dry, cool day with occasional sunshine & light airs greeted the 23 Juniors that were rigging in the morning. A grand turnout of 7 juniors from Leigh & Lowton included Sophie Stott, Gideon Slayen, Daisy Murphy, Laura Barnes, Andrew Price (didn't need the extra weetabix this time) in Toppers with Sarah & Lucy Yeates in their Optimists. The Race team coped admirably with the tricky conditions to provide interesting courses whilst the galley kept the parents (taxi drivers & trolley dollies) duly stoked with Coffee, Bacon Barms, Soup, Sandwiches, Cakes, Scones, Biscuits & yet more coffee.

The racing was competitive and many lessons were learn't about keeping going right to the end, tricky & constant windshifts ensured that the result was not guaranteed until the line was crossed. Sophie & Laura (in her 1st travelling event) were the Leigh & Lowton stars in race 1 whilst Daisy managed to break away from the pack in the closing stages of the 2nd race to finish 1st Topper - great stuff. The Oppy fleet comprised of Sarah & Lucy, what it lacked in numbers was made up for in competitive spirit!!. For the second successive event, after 2 races they had one win each, Sarah took the last race to win overall. The OD kindly mentioned after each race where they would have finished had they raced in the handicap fleet, in race 2 they would have been P1 & P3 (helpful PY perhaps). At the prizegiving everyone recieved a Winsford Flash SC Slate coaster & Daisy was singled out to receive a special prize for endeavour.
