Redesmere
3rd September 2005
Leigh
& Lowton Juniors went travelling -
All enjoyed the hospitality at Redesmere
The
9th event in the 2005 North West Junior Travellers series was held at
Redesmere on Saturday 3rd September. All
the visitors (including 8 juniors from Leigh & Lowton) were made very
welcome by the freindly Redesmere members, many of whom were seen prior
to the start scrubbing the pontoons & raking weed from the launch
area, whilst others provided free tea & toast - what service!!. The
guys even sorted the weather - warm sunshine & a nice F2/3 with the
odd extra gust for excitement - ask Luke (lets reduce the wetted area)
Pitt!! -

maybe he was checking for weed on the dagger board? (by the way Luke did
not capsize but went round the mark in this fashion - getting the cheer
of the day from the clubhouse. Quite a few of the L&LSC juniors were
caught out by the gusts & found themselves swimming at some time during
the day.
The services of the rescue boat were needed for one member of the Leigh
& Lowton party even before the briefing! Lucy, the Springer Spaniel,
sprang into action & was seen swallow diving & swimming at great
speed up the lake - can't think what she was chasing!!

A total of 40 boats approached the start lines, 36 of which were in the
Handicap fleet, amongst the usual Toppers & Lasers there was a National
12 & an Otter. This made for exciting & congested starts, Sarah
impressed during race 1 being lead Topper for the 1st lap.

At the end of the event, Daisy was 1st L&L sailor in the Handicap
fleet (11th) and was awarded a baseball cap, followed in order by Sarah,
Sophie, Andrew Price (great score in R3), Laura & Alice.

The Optimist Fleet was a bit more clear cut - Lucy got 3 wins & Chris
Barnes got 3 second places. The crowd of onlookers described the antics
of the 2 Oppies as reminiscent of Torville & Dean - akin to match
racing as Chis covered Lucy tack for tack both before the start &
up the first beat.

The organisers & members at Redesmere really must be congratulated
for running a very fine event with the welcome, as always, very warm and
the Barbecue lunch is one of the highlights of the whole series, this
years did not disappoint.
