The RYA North West Junior Travellers Trophy 2005

Budworth 2nd May 2005

Leigh & Lowton Juniors went travelling -
All got a share of the chocolates at Budworth

The third in the 10 event series was held at Budworth Sailing Club on a surprisingly warm & bright Bank Holiday Monday. A total of 37 boats took to the water, including 27 Toppers, 1 Laser, 1 Sport 16 & an impressive 8 Optimists. The wind strength could be described as just about right for this level of racing - the wind direction was a bit more difficult to describe! The race officers cleverly arranged for the legendary Budworth squall to make its appearance between race 2 & race 3, the only capsized boats this time were tied up to the pontoons - all safe. The rains forced youth coach Roger & social sec Debbie Taylor to seek refuge, they were out cycling in the area & came to spectate the events & see how the training is being put to good practise.
What Are They Looking At?
The Parental observation post was set up on the lawn in front of the clubhouse.

Who's Where?
Whilst the kids sorted out the real business.

The first 3 Topper sailors in the handicap fleet had just returned from the Topper inlands at Grafham where they scored very impressive results. The Leigh & Lowton juniors, Daisy Murphy, Sophie Stott, Gideon Slayen, Andrew Price, Andrew Green, Katlyn Green & Laura Barnes finished in that order, the sibling Greens were taking part in their 1st away travellers event. Particular mention must go to Daisy who got a 6th place & Andrew Price was delighted with an 8th in the last race, the finish of the day was executed by Sophie who pipped Daisy in the last few yards of race 2 backed up by great cheers from the gathered onlookers - exciting stuff. In one race Gideon overcame a poor start (back of the fleet) by working his way skillfully through the field to a creditable top 10 finish. A few gear failiures were blamed on the fairly strong gusts that appeared periodically.

The Oppy racing proved interesting. There were 3 helms vying for the top positions through the day, Sarah & Lucy Yeates were 1 & 2 in race 1 with Rachel Wilcock close behind. In race 2 Sarah lost a good lead, being overtaken by both Lucy & Rachel in the final stages of the race. So, once again it went down to race 3 where Sarah & Lucy broke away & swapped places a few times, Lucy came out in first place to take her first series win & was awarded both the Crompton Shield for the win & a box of Chocolates for being the youngest qualifing helm of the day.

The Leigh & Lowton team was awarded a large container of Chocolates for bringing the largest number of visitors with 9 helms. The chocolates did not last as long as the memories will of a fine days entertainment - well done Budworth.
